Actions AmongWomenSouthAfrica.org is taking action on several fronts,
supporting change in South Africa and raising awareness of issues on
the sub-Saharan continent at large. Efforts include the following initiatives:
Our first action: Supporting Room to Read – Founded by John Wood,
author of Leaving Microsoft to Change the World, Room to Read is building
its first school libraries
in the poorest areas of South Africa’s Eastern Cape… Raising
awareness of programs and products such as MonkeyBiz, selling beaded
handcrafts that provide income to the township women who create them – and
The Chaeli Campaign, bringing mobility and more to disabled South African
children in a range of ways – from therapy programs to hearing
aids, wheel chairs and specialized lap-top computers… Exploring
the possibility of our supporting mentoring programs and microfinance
for entrepreneurs, scholarships for able students, and development
of math and science education – as well as providing
computers and other resources needed to engage with the world… Considering
publishing and merchandising initiatives to raise funds and awareness.
