About Among Women Prelude | 2007 Twenty-nine alumnae of Barnard, Bryn Mawr,
Mount Holyoke, Smith and Wellesley, and their invited guests embark on the Among
Women program’s second international dialogue, South Africa: Beyond Apartheid – led
by former Bryn Mawr President Mary Patterson McPherson and sponsored by The Seven
Sisters Colleges. Arriving in Cape Town, we begin a series of extraordinary encounters
with women from a cross-section of South African society. Swept up in stunning
contrasts and contradictions, we are witness to and awed by the spirit, idealism
and passion of a nation in the throes of change – as well as by its possibilities.
Exhilarated, we are inspired by the strength of the bonds we are forming – galvanized
in our commitment to assist those South Africans in most dire need: its women
and children. Present | 2008 Having investigated many avenues for our first project
since returning, we are supporting Room to Read, founded by John Wood, author
of Leaving Microsoft to Change the World. We are mobilizing: referring candidates
for open positions, and raising funds for the first school libraries that Room
to Read is opening in South Africa - in the poorest areas of the Eastern Cape.
By providing access to books, both in English and several native South African
languages, we hope to instill a love of reading that will help equip generations
to live productively in our complex world. Audiences AmongWomenSouthAfrica.org
is an online resource for staying connected with one another, with our colleges’ alumnae
around the world, with our South African friends, and with people everywhere
who are moved by South Africa’s great possibilities. It is our desire to
unite, inspire and ultimately, mobilize this tremendous reservoir of humanity
in support of progress for the people of South Africa. Our Founding Members We
are 29 strong by the numbers, yet far greater in our collective heart and passion.
We want to help build a future filled with hope,
self reliance and joy for our South African sisters, their children and their
entire families. Our Partner Organizations In addition to partnering with Room
to Read, we are developing
relationships with other organizations and initiatives also engaged and investing
in the future of the sub-Saharan continent. Our Friends The World Over If you
