" I really appreciate the Among Women appeal
for our Room to Read program in South Africa. You have done your homework.
You have seen the poverty there and the progress. You have spent a lot
of time with the people there who can and want to help. You have a wonderful
network of contacts both in America and South Africa. We applaud your efforts
and welcome you as a partner." – John Wood, Founder, Room to
Read Author, Leaving Microsoft to Change the World. World change starts
with educated children.® This simple truth, the rallying cry of Room
to Read, has been learned first hand and embraced by Among Women South
Africa. The founders of AWSA are mostly alumnae of The Seven Sisters Colleges,
renowned for producing generations of highly educated, successful women – eager
to use their collective resources, talents and brain power for social equality
and justice. In addressing the United Nations Women’s Conference,
Archbishop Desmond Tutu said, “We men have made a proper mess of
things. We need women to save us." So who needs men? The answer is
Among Women South Africa. This all inclusive, international effort welcomes
the assistance of men and women everywhere of all ages and persuasions.
South Africa is a dichotomy of incredible beauty juxtaposed with equally
incredible poverty and living conditions for millions. These same South
Africans, despite extreme poverty and challenges, shine with the incandescence
of hope.
